Hollywood is mourning the loss of one of its most recognisable actors. Sir Patrick Stewart, best known for portraying Captain Jean-Luc Picard in ‘Star Trek’ and Professor Charles Xavier in ‘X-Men’, has died at the age of 86. His family confirmed the heartbreaking news on Thursday, October 29.

Patrick Stewart died on Wednesday while receiving care from his wife, Sunny Ozell, according to a statement shared by his representative. The veteran actor had been living with Alzheimer’s disease and Lewy body dementia.

The announcement was made through Stewart’s official social media accounts. His representative described his final moments as being surrounded by family and friends, with music, prayers, tears and laughter.

His passing has prompted an outpouring of tributes from colleagues, fellow actors and fans around the world.

Patrick Stewart became a global star as Captain Picard

Although Stewart had already established himself as a respected Shakespearean actor, his international breakthrough came in 1987.

That year, he was cast as Captain Jean-Luc Picard in Star Trek: The Next Generation. The series followed the crew of the USS Enterprise and quickly became one of the most successful productions in the science-fiction franchise.

Stewart played Picard throughout all seven seasons, appearing in 176 episodes. He also reprised the character in several feature films and the later series Star Trek: Picard.

His performance turned him into a household name and made Captain Picard one of television’s most recognisable science-fiction characters.

He also became Professor X in the ‘X-Men’ films

Stewart reached another generation of fans when he joined the X-Men franchise. In 2000, he made his debut as Professor Charles Xavier, the powerful mutant who founded and led the X-Men.

He played the character in several instalments of the popular superhero franchise, sharing the screen with actors including Hugh Jackman and Ian McKellen.

Stewart also reprised the role in later productions, including Logan and Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness.

He was expected to appear again as Professor X in the upcoming Marvel film Avengers: Doomsday.

Famous co-stars pay tribute to the legendary actor

Following news of his death, tributes quickly began appearing across social media.

Hugh Jackman, who worked alongside Stewart in the X-Men films, remembered his colleague as both an extraordinary actor and a wonderful friend. He said he had learned a great deal from him and would miss him deeply.

William Shatner, another major figure in the Star Trek universe, also shared a tribute. He praised Stewart for bringing intelligence, grace and humanity to his performances.

Ian McKellen, Stewart’s longtime friend and X-Men co-star, also paid tribute. Their friendship extended far beyond the film franchise, and the two actors had worked together on several stage productions.

Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige also remembered Stewart, praising his talent, generosity and lasting influence on the entertainment industry.

From Shakespearean theatre to Hollywood fame

Born on July 13, 1940, in Mirfield, West Yorkshire, England, Patrick Stewart began his acting career on the British stage.

He joined the Royal Shakespeare Company in 1966, spending many years performing in productions of classic plays. His theatre background helped establish his reputation as a highly respected performer long before Hollywood came calling.

During his career, Stewart received numerous awards and nominations. These included a Grammy Award, several Emmy nominations and two Laurence Olivier Awards.

In 2010, he was knighted by Queen Elisabeth for his services to drama. And in 2023, he released his memoir, Making It So, in which he reflected on his childhood, acting career and personal experiences.

Patrick Stewart is survived by his wife, jazz musician Sunny Ozell, and his two children, Daniel and Sophie, from his first marriage.

He leaves behind a remarkable body of work that has entertained audiences across generations.
